Welcome In-house blogger: Gina Harris

Gina L Harris has worked in media—in print, radio and television. She hosts a weekly room on the Clubhouse called Off The Shelf Culture and moderates discussions with filmmakers, artists, authors and thought leaders. She curates social media posts for Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. She is working on her first novel about an enslaved woman during the colonial era whose freedom is purchased by her African husband. The work encompasses four hundred years of discovery and liberation in America.“Sharing stories of those who have been forgotten or never even imagined has been an incredible journey. The opportunity to remember the ancestors whose existence have added tremendous value to the culture has been my greatest life experience.”

As a journalist, Ms. Harris wrote for The Burlington Free Press and the Times Argus newspapers in Vermont, the Afro American newspaper in Washington DC, and the Virginian-Pilot in Virginia. Her work has been featured in Black Filmmaker magazine, New England Film magazine, Urban Influence magazine, a publication of the National Urban League, The National Society of Black Engineers magazine, the Network Journal, and more.

As a cultural arts curator and film programmer, Ms. Harris produced a film program to commemorate the first African landing at Point Comfort with Project 1619 in Hampton, Va. And, she presented the first Black History Month film festival in Vermont, for two years, collaborating with University of Vermont, the Community College of Vermont, Barre Adult Learning Center, and various community groups.

Her mission, through film, written and spoken word, is to provide a space where audiences can experience stories by and about African-Americans that have not always been part of the mainstream or popular culture.

I am a storyteller. It is my job to tell the story, whatever medium I am able to use.
