Lead singer of The Manhattans, Gerard Alston,
will bring soul to the closing ceremony of the African Diaspora Film Festival.
Women filmmakers of color will be
honored with special award
'The ceremony will honor SYLVIA D. HAMILTON, winner of the Public Award for the Best Film Directed by a Woman of Color, the only competition of the festival established in 1995 in order to recognize and encourage the work of women filmmakers of color.
This year’s competition had outstanding candidates such as Native Hawaiian writer and filmmaker Anne Keala Kelly, which brings us “Noho Hewa:The Wrongful Occupation of Hawai’I,” an emotionally raw portrayal of issues that shape the political, economic and cultural world of Hawaiians; and Afro-Canadian filmmaker Dr. Sylvia D. Hamilton, who was competing for the prize with “The Little Black School house”, the story of women, men, and children who studied and taught at Canada's racially segregated schools up until 1984.
Other films in the competition are "The 16 of Basse Pointe" by Camille Mauduech," Looking for Life" by Claudette Coulange and "Sugar Pathways" by Johanna Bermudez Ruiz.

The lead singer of the legendary group The Manhattans, Gerald Alston, will return to the festival by popular demand to make the R&B enthusiasts dance with popular songs like “Kiss and Say goodbye” and “Shiny Star”. The one hour performance will be followed by a catered reception.
