A GULF BETWEEN US


"A Gulf Between Us" is set in London 1991 during the Gulf War. Arab student and part time baker Hassan rents a room from Jewish Ruth. They fall in love, but the outbreak of the Gulf war makes things difficult for them in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood. The film caused an outrage and great anger in the Egyptian press when it was shown in Cairo in 1995 and filmmaker Khaled El Hagar, who played the main role in the film, was accused of promoting normalization with Israel and was not able to go back to Egypt until 2003.
